THE HIT LIST #8: (JUNE 14 - JUNE 20) [2021]
Disclaimer #1: This is not a ranking
Disclaimer #2: Listen to the songs and judge them yourself instead of the blurb I write next to the song title. I’m not a writer, I’m a rider (usually on the back of my girl’s Harley). The descriptions are just meant to give you an idea of what kind of song it is. Usually the songs are Flex Anthems/Clubby Shaking Ass Records, Love Songs, Deep Personal Shit, Motivation Music or Niche, and sometimes a blend of multiple.
Disclaimer #3: It’s all Luv. If I missed something or made an error or omission, may the good Lord forgive me. And, hopefully you will too. Stay off my bumper, and don’t shoot me if you see me outside (mostly to the artists and their rabid fanbases).
****************************************************************************************************************************
Chief Keef - Hadouken: One of the most underrated diss tracks of all time is “Stomp” by Young Buck ft. T.I. & Ludacris. What’s unique about this diss track is Tip and Luda were beefing at the time and got on the same beat to diss each other and the beat is oh so hard (pause, unpause). Chief Keef, went all the way in over the Stomp beat which was produced by legends Juicy J & DJ Paul. Sosa warns the opps that he’s still strapped to the gills, and also clowns them for their subpar jewelry. He spends racks on beanies, True Religion Jeans, Lambo trucks, floor seats to the Lakers, and he doesn’t want to make sweet love to any woman wearing granny panties. At one point, he proves his dominance by just huffing and puffing over the beat. Luv Sosa!
Vince Staples - Law of Averages: One of the most eccentric personalities in the game, Long Beach’s own is back with this track. In it, he expresses his distrust of the ladies and he won’t even tell them his real name (I’m guessing it’s not Vince Staples). He will also not provide any money to the women. He also says he doesn’t trust his friends and he will take action against any one who comes between him and his money.
Eric Bellinger - Shine On The World: This gon be your favorite song! (or nah, iono) Upbeat bop. Eric B spreading that positivity. His message, don’t be afraid to let your let shine on the world. “If you in the dark, feeling shade, let your light show you the way, concrete dreams, paid, celebrate daily.”
Gucci Mane - Bust Down: “Bust Down, Bust Down, everybody Bust Down, I ain’t got much feeling in my heart, who can I trust now?” Gucci’s new album “Ice Daddy” dropped this week featuring his son Ice on the cover. This track has one of the best beats of the album and Guwop flexes hard on it. Icy wrist, icy ring, Lambos and Rolls, gold grills and loose diamonds, Droptop Wop has it all. He also stays around hittas, and they will shoot you in the ass cheeks. Other Tough Tunes from “Ice Daddy”:
Poppin (ft. BigWalkDog)
Trap Shit (ft. Lil Baby)
DBoy Style
I Got It (ft. Lil Uzi Vert)
Rich Nigga Shit
Top of Shit (ft. 2 Chainz & Young Dolph)
Wale ft. Chris Brown - Angles: This one’s sure to be a radio smash. A flip of “I Need a Girl Pt.1” the Maybach Music MC lets his shawty know that he will buy her all the rocks she desires (probably gems not crack). He’s vibing with her and invites her to sit on his face. That’s luv.
Soulja Boy - Rick & Morty: Rick! Rick! Rick! Soulja debuted this one on a Twitch stream while playing Fortnite (I believe). Then he dropped it as an official track. With Rick & Morty Season 5 premiering Sunday, it seems like perfect timing! (Or a rollout…) Nice lil beat and Soulja shows us why he’s considered one of the greatest artists of all time. Boasting about his firearms, his shorty, and his vehicles, Soulja delivers another catchy tune. I think the creators of the show owe him a cameo.
Tyler, The Creator - LUMBERJACK: The Odd Future alum is dropping an album “Call Me If you Get Lost” next week and he gave us this lil teaser. After winning a grammy for his melody-heavy last album “Igor” Ty Nasty as he’s know in the Jersey streets is back to bars. He thanks his parents for not pulling out (and thus conceiving him). He demands to be called LUMBERJACK because he wishes a nigga wood (get it?) He sold out Madison Square Garden and has hella whips so his haters should have zero material for fodder. His mans has some feminine traits so he calls him Mulan. On the last verse he reminisces about being labelled a weirdo, how no one wanted to listen to his music, but now he’s up quite a few Ms. All this while DJ Drama ad-libs the whole track. Tough Tune!
H.E.R. - Closer To Me: A rerock of Goapale’s “Closer”. H.E.R.’s version is about wanting her significant other to be closer to her (ohh I see what you did there). First, round of applause for H.E.R. for dropping her debut album Back of My Mind this week. The super talented singer, songwriter, musician, Super Bowl performer, and more has been on a rocketship to stardom for a few years and she has arrived! On this one, she encourages her boo thang to cast aside all their past drama and just lay there with her. She’s been healing but she says don’t rush. But when he (or she) is ready, she wants to make up for all the time they weren’t touching. Great track to put on your make-up sex playlist. And if you're quick on the trigger like me you won’t even make it through the whole song. Check out these other tracks from “Back of My Mind”:
Back of My Mind
Trauma (ft. Cordae)
Damage
Find A Way (ft. Lil Baby)
Bloody Waters (ft. Thundercat)
Come Through (ft. Chris Brown)
My Own
Paradise (ft. Yung Bleu)
Hold On
I Can Have It All (ft. DJ Khaled & Bryson Tiller)
Slide (ft. YG)
Don Toliver ft. Kali Uchis - Drugs N Hella Melodies: A sultry, steamy collab by the Cactus Jack crooner, Don Toliver, and Grammy-winning singer Kali Uchis (and an even steamier video, cheow!) Kali compares her lady parts to a sedative and like Ambien, that thang will put you right to sleep. She doesn’t want to sound conceited and she’s not one to brag, but she believes she’s the one you needed that you never had. Don compliments shawty, from her diamonds blinging, her designer fashions, and her intellect. He’s drawn to her for her beauty, brains and swag and promises to take her out and never bring her back. (Boss shit! Or Kidnapping… iono. Side Note: is it Kidnapping if you not a kid? Maybe abduction? What if you child is taking a nap… Is that kidnapping?)
Young Dolph ft. Snupe Bandz & Paper Route Woo - Nothing To Me: First thing you notice about this one is the beat. Piano loop with some drums and Dolph repeating the chant “These niggas ain’t fuckin with me.” Dolph is living the high life. He’s flying on private jets, he’s got Rolls-Royce trucks lined up outside of his mansion, and he’s been getting blowjobs within 30 minute of submitting a request (and dropping his pin). Snupe Bandz is a knockout artist with the punching skills of Muhammad Ali. He likes to spend his money on iced out necklaces, Patek Philippe watches, and an assortment of guns. Paper Route WOOOOOO only wears Very Very Special diamonds (VVS) and never tricks. He too loves blowjobs and also, Jordan sneakers, buying cars, Glocks, trips to Cali, and G Route pants.
DaBaby - Ball If I Want To: DA got that Dope killed this beat. Baby hops on and asks his main lady to put in hella weave tonight so when they have relations he can imagine he’s smashing Rapunzel. (Spicing things up with role play, great for keeping the relationship strong.) He then describes the many different positions he and his lady like to do it in and also confesses to his mama that his uncle used to hide his crackpipe in DaBaby’s mattress (not the one he uses now to blow his bae’s back out.) He then describes more ways he likes to do the hanky panky with shawty (including on the floor like some K-9’s) before warning the opps that he got the flame on him and if you check his stats, he ain’t afraid to use it.
Majid Jordan - Been Through That: Soulful electrofunk. The OVO duo dropped this summer jam, perfect for cruising in your drop top coupe with your main thang sipping Piña Cola Slurpees with rum mixed in. The guys admit this will be a radio hit “Play this song til it’s all played out.” The message on this one is empathy. Majid (the singer) expresses an understanding for what one of his (presumably) lady friends is going through. He knows sometimes she has bad days, and his expression of understanding assures her it’ll be OK. Just listen to the fucking song alright!?
Skepta & Pop Smoke ft. A$AP Rocky, Juicy J & Project Pat - Lane Switcha: Off the Fast and the Furious soundtrack. What sticks out is how great Pop Smoke’s verse is. To have all that material for his platinum album last year after he passed away and to continue to have verses like these shows you the work ethic he had while he was with us. RIP to the young king. Skepta, Juicy and Rocky kill their verses too. You’ll prolly hear this one somewhere in the movie.
Cordae & Common - What’s Life: An old song from Cordae, re-released on Disney’s Juneteenth EP and featuring a new verse from Common. Cordae ponders, “What is life without love? What is life without dreams? What’s life without goals?” It’s obvious he’s an ambitious guy. He laments about the ills of the world, jealousy, hatred, and greed, but he has hope and knows real love conquers all. Common wonders what his legacy will be. He acknowledges his spiritual nature, his lack of a ceiling in life and warns the haters that if they want beef he wit it if they wit.
Migos - New Money: “Every new day you gotta get some new money.” The Deluxe to the Migos new album “Culture III” dropped this week and this is my favorite of the new 5 tracks that were added. The guys are encouraging us to put the past behind us, get on that good foot and get some new money. Hustle hard, get some rest, wake up and repeat.
Goldlink ft. Fire & Santigold - Wild and Lethal Trash!: After a hiatus Goldlink has been dropping off singles in anticipation for his new album “HARAM!” which arrived this week. It’s somewhat experimental with the vocals and beats (kinda like Yeezus) but this is one of the more “traditional” tracks but still has a unique sound (shoutout to the pan flute). Featuring British artist (I think) Fire! The guys talk about their likes and dislikes. Some of their likes: women (specifically Halle Berry’s character in BAPS), cars, iced out jewelry, shooting niggas, stabbing niggas and real G’s. Some of their dislikes: snitches, hoes and dancing. Also from “HARAM!”:
Raindrops (ft. Flo Milli)
Twin (ft. Rich the Kid)
Culture Clash (ft. Fire)
Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk (ft. Jesse Boykins III)
