The Hit List #80: (October 31 - November 6)
Drake & 21 Savage - Circo Loco: Listen. You’ve heard this album, you know it slaps. This is one of the spicier tracks where Drake subs quite a few artists. I think the thing that really stuck out to me is the Daft Punk “One More Time” sample. “Her Loss” is a special album. Go listen to it again, you’ll probably catch some shit you didn’t catch before.
OG DAYV & Future - Limoncello: The “Wakanda Forever” soundtrack dropped this week and the big draw was the Return of Rih but the whole thing has some heavy hitters on there. It’s a mix of African sounds (including Afrobeats) and Latin music as the antagonist in the film is played by a Latino actor and I believe in the movie the character Namor (Submariner) has ancient Aztec or Mayan heritage. My favorite track is “Limoncello” with Future & OG DAYV. Check out the “Wakanda Forever'' soundtrack and go see the film this Friday, 11/11.
Lil Maru - High: New artist alert! I don’t know how I came across this track but the soulful downtempo beat immediately hooked me. It’s a love song but also a weed anthem. Bump this while you smoking that za with your bae. It’s the perfect track to get lifted to.
Huey Briss - The Hand That Feeds: Briss don’t miss! I first came across Huey Briss through designer Anwar Carrots (fellow Jerseyan). He would be at Anwar’s pop ups performing. He dropped a new project this week called “Wishing Out Loud” and it’s a West Coast Banger top to bottom. My favorite track is “The Hand That Feeds”. It has a bouncy, snap beat with a hi-hat loop. Huey speaks the truth about power and illusions. He’s tryna get all the cheese and knows he’ll starve if he sits waiting for a plate. He wakes up, prays for a milli, and then goes and puts in the work to get it. Check out “Wishing Out Loud” and these highlights:
Warren G
Lights Get Low
Everything I Do
Kodak Better Run (Day Is Done): A week after dropping a new project, Yak is back with a loosie and it’s a slapper. I had this bumping in the ride today and I was ready to spin the block on all my opps (jk my opps don’t exist…) It definitely has hints of Super Gremlin. He talks about being a Z, shooting niggas, and getting BJs (all things I can relate to except the first two things…) Kutthroat Business, Kodak is in fact the boss.
Lecrae - Take Me Up: Lecrae dropped a new album this week called “Church Clothes 4” and it’s safe to say he’s mastered the art of Modern Gospel Rap. My dad’s a big church guy and a big music guy (He DJ’d Gospel night at our local skating rink and he still does paid DJ gigs to this day to keep him busy during retirement). You can tell Lecrae listens to all music because he’s really caught the wave. When Cross Movement came out (early Gospel rap) it definitely sounded like it was from a previous era but Lecrae's music is almost indistinguishable from what you hear on the radio (aside from the content). My favorite track on the new project was this flip of Bone Thugs’ smash hit (and Grammy Winner “Tha Crossroads”. The original already has a spiritual feel and Lecrae interpolated the “And we pray everyday” part geniusly (is that a word? It is now!) I was bumping this in the gym today and it really got me locked in. Go check out “Church Clothes 4” if you love The Lord & great music.
CEO Trayle - Craxk Flow: ATLien CEO Trayle dropped a new project this week called “HH5” that was featured prominently throughout Apple Music so I had to give it a listen. Dope project, my favorite track is “Craxk Flow” which has a jazzy soul sample incorporating sax chords. Trayle is thinking about cash flow, and smashing the baddest of bitties. His life is a movie, he smokes weed, stacks paper, pops a couple percs and gets sloppy toppy all day. Other standouts from “HH5”:
Sincerely Yours
I Love You, But…
Unusual
Chain Smoking
Sleepy Hallow - Marie: One of the most underrated in the game Sleepy Hallow has been holding it down for Winner’s Circle while Sheff G is locked down. He dropped a loosie this week (produced by Great John who produces most of Sleep & Sheff’s tracks). It’s downtempo and Sleep uses a melodic flow to spit to his bae. He wants her to get in her feels when she hears this track. He knows she ain’t got time to be sitting & waiting and he wonders if she’d still want to kick it with him if he wasn’t famous. She’s his drug (she gets him higher than his weed). Her name you ask? Marie, of course (hence the song title).
Derez De’Shon - View You Different: Derez De’Shon dropped a new project this week called “Bigger Than Me” and it’s absolutely fire! For those who like that Down South, Fat Nigga Pain Music like Rod Wave or Morray (who’s featured on this project) this one’s for you. My favorite track is “View You Different”. Derez sings to his main thang to ask her what she doing. He has an issue with her showing her goodies online. He don’t want folks gossiping about her. Her actions have him viewing her different (he still wanna fuck tho lol). Check out “Bigger Than Me” and these highlights:
Abandoned
Save Me (ft. 1Shot Dealz)
In My Feelings
All Them Days (ft. Morray)
Sacrifices
S.T.L.B. (ft. Big Boogie)
For The Money
A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - Ballin: High Bridge! Shoutout to Boogie for being honest about why he pushed his album back. Drake dropped and he didn’t want no smoke. He didn’t even push it a week, he pushed it a whole month, let that shit breathe a lil bit. He did bless us with this loosie where he talks about ballin like LeBron’s son (could be Bronny could be Bryce they both ballin outta control). He got his hoodie on like Melo in the Garden. He calls his guns Steph and Seth (because they shoot well). He shoots with his left like Harden. I love the basketball theme and A Boogie has cemented himself as a Top 5 melodic rapper. Can’t wait for “Me vs Me” to drop.
Yhung T.O. - Finer Things: SOBxRBE’s Yhung T.O. dropped a solo project this week called “Rather Rich Than Famous”. If you’re a fan of the squad, you’ll love this one. My favorite track is “Finer Things” (I’ve had it on repeat all week.) T.O. knows his chick loves him because he flexes and because he makes her moist in her nether region. He goes round after round with her all over the house even if he’s hella drunk or super faded. He admits he needs her and he wants to keep on going strong with shawty. You gotta check out “Rather Rich Than Famous” and these standouts:
Politics
Stay Inside (ft. Lil Sheik)
Sport Mode (ft. YG)
No Retreat (ft. Jay Rock)
Art of Money Getting
BROCKHAMPTON - Big Pussy: The posse known as BROCKHAMPTON had announced that they’re doing one final project and one final tour before going on an indefinite hiatus and I believe this is the 1st drop of the farewell tour. Just like the crew the song title is in your face. They talk about the group's disbandment in the track and Kevin Abstract says the F word that I can’t say. It has a funky backpacker beat with some scratches (a la Run DMC) that flips into a soul sampled bop. You gotta check out the video too. These guys are true artists.
Yung Fazo ft. Dom Corleo - motion: There’s a new sound in Hip-Hop that Playboi Carti was one of the originators of (with Pie’rre Bourne). High pitched vocals, synth-y, electronic beats and now guys like Yeat and Ken Carson are becoming rock stars with this recipe. Another artist riding that wave is Yung Fazo, who dropped a new project this week called “me vs me”. It’s one of my favorite projects of the week and I really love “motion” with Dom Corleone. It has a bouncy, poppy beat. Fazo lives the fast life and smokes hella gas. He rides with the top down with dollar signs on his mind. Check out “me vs me” and these highlights:
new me
high as me
ttwlg
steal da swag
lying again
relocate
Ken Carson - Fashion Habits: Speaking of the angel. Ken Carson dropped the Deluxe to his debut album “X” with this version called “Xtended” My favorite of the new tracks is “Fashion Habits'' where he talks about depression & swag. He likes fornication, private jets and Balenciaga. KC spends large amounts of money fighting depression with his Fashion Habits (buying Louis V, Rick Owens and more).
Masego - Say You Want Me: Multi-hyphenate Masego dropped a new loosie this week. It’s got Afro-beat vibes. Masego asks his bae to call his name at night and confirm that she does indeed want him. He’s on his way to drop dick off and he just wants shawty to let him inside. Once they get going, they going round after round on the bed, floor and more.
Sy Ari Da Kid ft. Trouble - Somewhere on Norfolk Street: NY by way of ATL spitter Sy Ari Da Kid dropped a new album this week called “The Shadow In the Shade 2”. It’s 21 tracks of straight gas and I love the project. One of the biggest standouts is the collab with the recently deceased Trouble (RIP) where Sy Ari confesses to knowing the dude who shot the ATL rapper and also the chick Trouble was messing with when he tragically lost his life. The song even features a Trouble verse. This track and “The Shadow In the Shade 2” is a must listen. Other highlights:
Vantage Point
To Be Continued
The Rules of Engagement
Final Fantasy 7
Jagged Edge
A President Short of a Nomination
21 Lil Harold - Robbin Season: 21 can ya do something for me? Big week for Slaughter Gang as not only did we get the collab album with Drake & Savage, we got a loosie from Lil Harold. It samples D.O.C.’s hit “It’s Funky Enough” and has some organ keys intertwined. Harold ain’t got time for a freak bitch, but he does have time to pop the opps. He has many guns, great aim, and he’s willing to let bullets fly when necessary. He don’t fuck wit snitches and he’s really only interested in getting money and laying low.
Slim400 ft. Casey Veggies - Luv That Shit: RIP Slim 400. The Cali MC, who tragically lost his life this year, had a posthumous album drop this week called “Hol’Upppp 4Eva”. Dope project, West Coast vibes throughout. My favorite track is the Casey Veggies collab “Luv That Shit”. This one is a bop. Casey talks that shit, he’s on the West Side and he’s running shit. He’s looking for a new crib and just got a new chick. Slim 4 talks about his whip, sipping Actavis, getting lifted, and getting dome. He don’t fuck wit nut ass niggas and stacks paper in large amounts.
