The Hit List Week 89: (January 2 - January 8)
Quavo - WITHOUT YOU: MVP track of the week goes to Quavo who dropped this heartfelt track in memory of his nephew and groupmate, Takeoff. Even though they were uncle and nephew, they were actually more like brothers. He misses kicking with him, misses his smile, he wishes he had a time machine. He hopes to reunite with him in heaven one day. Amen.
French Montana, DJ Drama, & Vory - Project Baby (Remix): French Montana dropped the 6th installment of his Coke Boys series, this time in collaboration with DJ Drama. Hella dope features including Stove God, A$AP Rocky, Max B, Benny & EST Gee. My favorite track is the Nav track “Fenty” that dropped a couple months ago. I also loved the Smooky Margiela + A$AP collab. One of my other favorites is the track with Vory “Project Baby (Remix)”. Beat has an epic feel with the keys and the horns. French and Vory were both Project Babies but they climbed out the gutter. Nice contracting vocals with Vory’s melodious delivery and French’s bars and then the extra sauce with Drama’s ad libs in the background. Check out “Coke Boys 6”, one of the best projects to drop this year so far.
Big K.R.I.T. - Birthday Song: One of the most underrated in the game drop this loosie in the vein of Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday” and Drake’s “Ratchet Happy Birthday”. It’s a Birthday Turn-Up bop to be played in the clubs, at private parties or any day you wanna celebrate another year on this Earth.
NBA Youngboy - Fight With My Sheets: Youngboy (who recently got married according to the streets) dropped a new project this week called “I Rest My Case”. 19 tracks, many of them sound like he got the Trippie Redd beat pack and decided to go all the way in. My favorite track is “Fight My Sheets” which has a more classic YB sound. Downtempo as Youngboy uses a melodic delivery to spit game to his main lady. Check out “I Rest My Case”.
Ty Dolla $ign - 2022: Tyrone Dollar Sign dropped a new loosie this week bidding farewell to 2022. He wonders if this is where his story (with someone) ends or if it’s where it begins. He knows that he can’t get the time back nor can he repair all the hate in the air. Shawty left him in 2022 and it’s unfortunate but they’ll always have the memories. He thought they would make it through but in 2023 he’s gonna be with someone new.
Q Da Fool - Neck of Da Woods: DMV spitter Q Da Fool dropped a new project this week called “I’ll Be Back”. My favorite track is his flip of Birdman’s “Neck of Da Woods” (also titled Neck of Da woods). On this version, Q tells us how he’s living like.
Popcaan ft. Drake - Wa Caa Done: Island vibes as Jamaican Drake returns for this collab with Dancehall legend and OVO artist Popcaan. Drake gets in his Patois bag and Pop anchors the club ready track.
Real Boston Richey - Paper Tags: Florida rapper Real Boston Richey dropped a new project this week called “Public Housing, Pt. 2”. 34 tracks of slappers, with some A1 features including Future, Moneybagg, Kodak & Durk. My favorite track is “Paper Tags” which has a wavy beat and finds RBR with a high class, super thick chick with hella ass, hella cash, and a Chanel Bag. He’s got more game than Gary Vee and he’s thankful for the opportunities (and bread) that the rap game has blessed him with.
Vedo ft. Chris Brown - Do You Mind: Singer Vedo dropped this collab with C Breezy and it’s one of my favorite tracks of the week. Uptempo, funky beat, club-ready, this is one to set the mood. Vedo just tryna come through, pour up, roll up, grab some booty, then bless them cheeks. This is Brown’s second top tier “Do You Mind” and you know he gets in his grown and sexy bag. He promises to lick it then stick it (as long as she doesn’t mind of course).
Iamsu! ft. Steezy - Fake Love: Iamsu dropped an EP last week called “Out The Blue” and all 4 tracks slap. My favorite track is Fake Love. The guys been experiencing so much Fake Love that it’s hard to tell the difference between the real and the fugazi. All they ask, is for the real ones that show that they different.
Kamaiyah - Thru The Week: West Coast bop from one of the most underrated in the game. Monday thru Sunday Queen ‘Maiyah is all about the benjamins and freaking them hoes through the late night. If you wanna be around here, you gotta have a great mind. Everyday she’s working, grinding, hustling, getting that gouda.
Dusty Locane, Kajun Waters & Fergie Baby - SAILS: NY Driller Dusty Locane dropped a collab album this week called “-95 Degrees” with Kajun Waters. It’s a change of pace for Dusty as many of the tracks are lovey dovey songs. My favorite is the opening track “SAILS” with Fergie Baby. Beat crazy as the guys talk about the high life, caviar, champagne and ask they shawty to not make them wait too long.
21 Lil Harold - Out of Time: Slaughter Gang Shit! Lil Harold got a lil run goin. Dropped a project not too long ago, some loosies, and some features. He might be loading the clip all the way up for 2023 (with the extendo & a switch). He’s back again this week with another track “Out of TIme”. It’s all about him getting money, getting an assortment of watches (including but not limited to APs, Plain Jane Rollies & Richard Milles), getting the baddest of bitties, and stomping on opps.
Lil Darius ft. Peezy - Neighborhood Trapstars: The D and The A linked on this one. This is another great find from the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. One of my favorite producers, Helluva made the beat and the wavy vibe with the keys and flute lacing the Detroit-type template is top tier. Darius' melodic delivery with Peezy’s bars offer a nice contrast and this one will be in heavy rotation in my whip.
Jugg Harden - The Boondocks: Another dope find on the Apple Music New Hip Hop Playlist. This one finds Jugg Harden sampling the theme music from one of the greatest shows of all time, The Boondocks. It don’t even matter what he did on the beat (he showed out btw) this one was sure to be a smash (and I’ve had this one in heavy rotation too).
Other Tracks/Projects That Dropped This Week
Tony Yayo ft. Lloyd Banks - Rocket Chamber
Logic - Insipio
Russ - Put You On Game
Ice Spice - In Ha Mood
