The Hit List week 91: (January 16 - January 22)
Boldy James & RichGains ft. Ann One & Jonathan Chapman - Wrong Side of Town: Shoutout to Boldy J. The Detroit Rapper was hospitalized in critical condition after a gnarly car accident. While recovering, his team dropped a new project he had in the tuck with producer RichGains called “Indiana Jones” and it’s a great one. Beats are soulful and BJ uses a silky smooth delivery to mesh with the beats. Jonathan Chapman & Cassie Jo Craig shine throughout the album and my favorite track is “Wrong Side of Town” which features Ann One & Jonathan Chapman. Do yourself a favor and check out “Indiana Jones” and these highlights:
Saint & Sinners (ft. Cassie Jo Craig)
Electric Blue (ft. Jonathan Chapman)
SOS (ft. Chuckstaaa)
Frozen (ft. Cassie Jo Craig)
Kelela - Contact: The DMV’s own Kelela dropped a new track this week. It has a 90’s clubby sound as she sings about sashaying to the dance floor, hella faded, losing herself to the music.
Trippie Redd & Chief Keef - ROCK OUT: Trippie Redd dropped a new star-studded album this week called Mansion Musik. Lots of Trippy beats (pun intended) and like 3 Chief Keef features (the man knows talent). My favorite track is ROCK OUT which has a beat that sounds like 2005 Trap Jeezy. Some Don Cannon/DJ Drama shit. The guys talking bout smashing bitties, skirting off in the Lam, and smoking the Za-est of Za. Other standouts from “Mansion Musik”:
DARK BROTHERHOOD (with Lil Baby)
MUSCLES (with Lil Durk)
A$AP Rocky - Same Problems: Papa Rocky dropped a new track this week dedicated to all the rappers who we’ve lost and anyone who ever lost someone. It’s melodic and in the video it shows pictures of everyone from Takeoff to his own pops (who passed away). He asks himself if he’s a product of the content of his songs or maybe a product of all of his flaws. Tough Tune.
Ice Spice & Lil Tjay - Gangsta Boo: NY’s princess of Drill, Ice Spice, dropped her debut project “Like?...” this week. It features her smash hit “Munch” and the loosies she’s dropped over the past few months. Myself (and the streets) really love the Lil Tjay collab “Gangsta Boo” which samples Loon & Diddy’s “I Need a Girl Pt. 2”.
Wiz Khalifa - Love To Smoke: Wiz has spent the last few weeks crusading for that Mary Jane. It could’ve been sparked by a tweet (see what I did there) but he made a video denouncing people who quit smoking then like a month later talk about how better their life is. He said to report back in 10 years. His logic is if you smoked for 10 years, stay sober for 10 years then let us know how you feeling. He wants to dispel the “lazy stoner” stereotype. This week he dropped a dedication to one of the loves of his life simply called “I Love to Smoke”. It samples the Biggie & Jay-Z hit “I Love the Dough" (which itself samples René & Angela’s “I Love You More”). Wavy bop as Wiz smokes and gets a load off his chest (pause, unpause).
Elcamino & TrickyTrippz - Riverside: NY spitter Elcamino dropped a new project this week called “Devil’s Due”. I love the “Riverside” track which has some saucy keys as EC spits those gritty bars and I think what hooked me about this track is when he says he listens to Chief Keef when he’s mobbin out (me too my nig!)
J. Cole - procrastination (broke): So allegedly J. Cole went on YouTube and typed in J. Cole Type Beat, found something he rocked with, cooked up the track then posted it on the producer’s page to shine a bright light on him. If you go to YouTube you can read the text he sent to the producer letting him know the story behind the track. You know the bars are top tier and the beat is certainly super dope. Tough Tune.
Allstar JR - Million Dolla Thoughts 2: Detroit in the building! Allstar JR been bubbling with his single “Kissing” with Pretty Brayah and this week he dropped off a new project called “Organized Crime 2”. Super dope project, My favorite tracks are “Critical 2 Stable”, “Deep In the Game 2” and “Million Dolla Thoughts 2” (basically if it got 2 in the title, I’m fucking with it heavy). If you love that new Detroit Sound check out, “Organized Crime 2” and these highlights:
One Time I Cried
Empty (with Babyface Ray)
Kissing (ft. Pretty Brayah)
Deep In the Game 2
Naomi Sharon - Another Life: Streets is saying Naomi Sharon is a new OVO artist and she dropped a two pack of gas with “Another Life" and “Celestial”. “Another Life” has a dark synth-wave sound. Naomi’s vocals communicate her strong feelings of love. She knows it’s a wicked game but still we play it. She must believe in reincarnation because she talks about Another Life (if reincarnation is real I’d like to come back as a falcon, just putting it out there.) I purchased this track right away and you should go give it a listen.
Kota the Friend - LIFE LESSONS: NY Spitter Kota the Friend dropped a new project this week, the 4th edition of his “Lyrics to Go” series. Dope project, you know he gets into his introspective bag especially on my favorite track “Life Lessons”. He spits jewel after jewel including some advice for his son and lessons he’s learned from mistakes he’s made. Check out “Lyrics To Go, Vol, 4“ and these standouts:
Mt. FUJI
SHE Pt. 2
FIDDLE LEAF
Ron Suno - DOOR: NY Driller Ron Suno (you know the vibes!) dropped a new loosie this week. Drill beat with Ron Suno promising to kick in the opps’ door. He’s in the field like he’s playing lacrosse and he’ll spin the block until he sends the opps to The Lord.
Baby Stone Gorillas - Block Benders: The Rich Bloods dropped a new loosie this week (I think I saw that they about to drop a project soon). “Block Benders” is wavy West Coast bop. BSG down to slide when it’s time to slide. And they be hugging the block like Cam’ron. They live life fast, get it out the mud and all they bitties be running back for more.
The Kid Laroi - I Can’t Go Back to The Way It Was: The Australian artist dropped a new track this week reminiscing about the past. He knows he’s not a magician and he doesn’t have a time machine so he can’t go back and relive the memories. He’s lost some loved ones and fully accepts that no matter where he runs he can’t go back to the way it was.
