The Hit List #97: (February 27 - March 5)
Young Nudy ft. Key Glock - Pot Roast: Young Nudy dropped a new album called “Gumbo” early in the week and this one may be my favorite of his. Whole thing slaps, my favorite track is the Key Glock collab “Pot Roast” produced by Pi’erre Bourne. Nudy getting money and his opps have very little. He’s got shooters all over Fulton County and he’s not one to be trifled with. Glizzock is a real deal Holyfield nigga, show him his opponent. All his opps is capping and he’ll pop them like a pimple or grill them like a shrimp. The guys are for real, they play in the field 4L.
NBA Youngboy - Next: Streets saying YB got a new album coming called “Don’t Try This At Home”. He dropped off two tracks this week including “Next”. This is a YoungBoy beat if I ever heard one and he spits that head bussa shit. His youngins will spin and spin and spin until the opps meet their end. He’s got bitties for days and money to the ceiling.
BandGang Lonnie Bands - Blow Fish: BandGang Lonnie Bands dropped a new project this week called “Can’t Ban The Bandman 2” the title pays homage to the classic Jeezy Mixtape. “Blow Fish” immediately stuck out, with its smooth vibes and Lonnie’s flow. It has some Detroit-type beat elements and Lonnie spits about his lil Blow Fish (all she wanna do is drink and suck meat). He’s a smooth criminal (on the song) like Mike Jackson.
Wiz Khalifa ft. Snoop Dogg - Don’t Text Don’t Call: Wiz & Snoop are two rappers who have fully embraced Funk and this collab is Super Funky. Wiz sings to one of his tings. He don’t wanna see her tomorrow so he tells her Don’t Text Don’t Call. He’s sick of the games and he’s got a new one that wants to roll with him. Snoop doesn't mind cutting em off, he’s a G after all. He can’t trust em, and he’s all about his paper anyway. If you’re not giving top, get outta Snoop’s section.
Kenny Mason ft. Tony Shhnow - 100 or Nun: Kenny Mason dropped off a 3 pack this week and this Tony Shhnow stood out for its sample of H-Town’s “Knockin Boots”. Kenny likes girls who like girls. He’s built different and takes care of his ride or die chick. It’s 100 or Nun, shawty's the one he wants and he’s all in or all out, no in between. Tony found the girl of his dreams. He’s not the jealous type, he lets his one chick mess around with his other one. He’s getting money and enjoys the fruits of his labor.
ShooterGang Kony ft. Rexx Life Raj - No Applause: ShooterGang Kony dropped a loosie with Faraji this week. It’s one of those heartfelt beats with keys that set the mood. Kony is on his toes watching for those in his crew that might turn on him. He don’t got faith in niggas. His love isn’t given out freely and it can easily be retracted. Rajj handles the hook. He has faith in himself and he knows that real niggas don’t get No Applause but also real niggas don’t do it for applause.
6lack - Since I Have a Lover: The artist known phonetically as Black, has a new project scheduled to drop later this month. This is the 1st single. It has a Pop/Alt-Rock sound with acoustic strings. It’s definitely one to smoke and get lifted to. Summertime feel. It’s a whole ass vibe and I’m interested to hear what the project sounds like.
Kali Uchis - All Mine: Kali Uchis dropped a new album this week called “Red Moon in Venus”. With its proximity to Donny T’s new album I think it’s safe to assume they’ll be touring together over the next year. My favorite track “All Mine” sounds like it has a little bit of the “Pony” bass loop in it. It’s downtempo and Kali tells her competitors that she doesn't gotta fight for what’s hers, her man is All Mine (hers). They try to take what’s hers but they can’t come close.
Nicki Minaj - Red Ruby Da Sleeze: The Queen’s back and she’s back with bars on bars. The beat flips Lumidee’s hit “Never Leave You” and Nicki unleashes a lyrical onslaught. No more to say, just go listen.
Macklemore ft. Tones And I - CHANT: Grammy-winner Macklemore released a project this week titled “Ben” (his government name). Dope project with an eclectic mix of sounds. I can’t remember the last time I heard a cohesive project with this many different sounds on an album but Dirty Mac pulls it off well. My favorite track is the opening track “CHANT”. It starts off with keys and bars, Ben bearing his soul (almost like “Can’t Hold Us”). He almost OD’d but he’s a fighter. The pain made him strong. The beat picks up after the 1st hook and Mack turns it up. He knows the money doesn’t buy happiness and instead of hoarding the dough he gives back.
Foolio, Wam SpinThaBin & La Cracka - Standing On Biz: Florida’s Own Foolio dropped a new project this week called “Nothing Here”. My favorite track is this collab with Wam SpinTha Bin & La Cracka. The guys stay with Glocks & mops and they stay sweeping the streets. They shoot for they guys because they know the guys will shoot for them. They not bout that internet shit, they spin the block till they dizzy.
Larry June & The Alchemist - 89 Earthquake: I’m pretty sure these two have an album coming soon. I even saw a viral clip where June gets Al to rap (I think it was at Rolling Loud). This track is classic Al with Larry fully in his wavy P bag and the title a reference to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that killed over 60 people and injured thousands in the Bay Area.
Finesse2Tymes ft. Kevin Gates - CEO: Finesse2Tymes dropped the Deluxe to his most recent album, this one called “90 Days Later”. My favorite track on the Deluxe is the Kevin Gates collab “CEO”. They are both at the top of the food chain in their respective circles like CEOs (ain’t nobody higher). Hard, Down South Trap beat and both men’s distinct deep voices compliment the production well.
Che Noir & Big Ghost Ltd ft. Ransom & 38 Spesh - Bad Apples: The Queen of Boom Bap dropped a new project this week with Big Ghost Ltd called “Noir or Never” (dope). The Ransom & 38 Spesh collab stands out as my favorite. The beat sounds like something out of a movie with the electric guitar riffs. The bars from all 3 are top tier and even though they may be Bad Apples, they’re some Good ass rappers.
Maiya The Don - Dusties: Another week, another great find on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. This one comes from NY’s own Maiya The Don (I’m guessing she’s from NY by the accent and the slang). “Dusties” is like the 2023 “No Scrubs”. MTD didn’t even use a NY Drill beat to go in on these niggas. In fact, she samples “Magic Stick” with a bouncy club-ready beat. She lets the dusty ass niggas know that they can’t touch her. They thought she was feeling them but it’s not that kinda party.
Masego - What You Wanna Try: Uncle Sego dropped a new album this week, this one self-titled. It’s that Jazzy Sego sound throughout. My favorite track “What You Wanna Try” has a nice hi-hat/snare loop and finds Masego starting the 1st verse with the flow from “Tom’s Diner”. He sings to a shawty, he wants to know what’s her flavor. He suspects she might want him for his loot, but he’s still intrigued.
ZayBang - So Long: The Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist comes through again. This ZayBang track is a Certified Banger. He has no qualms about breaking up from a shawty or kicking friends to the curb when they start subtracting more than they adding. He’s telling them all, So Long. He’s not scared to die alone.
Don Toliver ft. Travis Scott - Embarrassed: Back to Back! Donny T wasted no time dropping the Deluxe to his most recent album “Love Sick”. It adds 4 new tracks including collabs with Teezo Touchdown and Cactus Jack himself. “Embarrassed” is downtempo and finds the guys flexing their diamonds in Paris. Hella chains on, too turnt, they use a melodic flow to vibe out.
Downtown Dion - Ride or Not: Apple Music’s New hip Hop Playlist comes through again. This time Downtown Dion flips the Ruff Ryders classic “Ryde or Die Chick”. This one asks the shawtys are they gonna Ride or Not? Double D needs a Ride or Die chick. Loyalty over everything.
Mach-Hommy ft. Tha God Fahim - Bad Hands: Jersey’s own Mach-Hommy dropped a new project this week called “Notorious Dump Legends: Volume 2”. He reps hard for Haiti throughout and even spits in French. My favorite track is “Bad Hands” with Tha God Fahim. It has, what sounds like a 60’s Doo Wop beat, some shit Frankie Lymon and them would sing on. Both Mach and Fahim spit some filthy bars over the background vocals and minimal drums. It’s a truly unique track.
Dreamville ft. Big Sean & EST Gee - Anthem: Dreamville helped cook up the soundtrack for the new Creed III film. The soundtrack is just as action packed as the movie, with features from the Dreamville crew, and some other stars in both Hip-Hop and R&B. My favorite track is this Big Sean & EST Gee anthem (see what I did there). This one is already in heavy rotation on my gym playlist. The beat is crazy and Sean breaks out his best motivation bars. I didn’t think this instrumental was EST’s bag but surfs the beat with expert precision.
