The Hit List WEEK 98: (March 6 - March 12)
Joyner Lucas - Devil’s Work 2 (Not Now, I’m Busy): Joyner dropped a new track talking about some of the bad things that transpired over the past few years. He asks God for some do-overs. He wishes we could press rewind on many things including the Will Smith & Chris Rock incident, Pop Smoke’s death, Kobe & Gigi’s crash, Brittney Griner’s prison bid, PnB Rock’s death, the Meg Thee Stallion shooting, DMX’s death, Takeoff’s death, Tiny “D-Bo” Lister’s death, 69 snitching, Donda’s death and George Floyd’s death. He also remembers Biz Markie, Drakeo, King Von, Virgil, Black Rob, Trouble, Shock G, Young Dolph, Pat Stay, Fred the Godson, JuiceWrld and Chadwick Boseman. He knows it’s not God’s fault, it’s the Devil’s work.
FNF Chop - If The Shoe Fits: VA’s own FNF Chop dropped a new album this week called “Who Is Chop?” and it’s my favorite drop of the week. Whole album slaps and the Fivi feature is crazy. I really love “If The Shoe Fits”. He talks about everybody who doubted him, labels who wouldn’t give him the time of day, now he up and the roles are reversed. He admits being hurt by some bitties and he also admits doing some dirt to stay afloat. It’s personal now and he’s holding a grudge. He’s channeling that energy and rapping with a chip on his shoulder. You gotta check out “Who Is Chop?” and these highlights:
Repeat (ft. Fivio Foreign)
Yea Yea Yea
Eenie Meenie
Blackout (ft. Soski)
Bounce Back
Paint
Hunxho ft. Tee Grizzley - Uh Huh: Hunxho dropped a new loosie this week, this one with an assist from Tee Grizzley. I still bump his track “Heartless” heavy, and he’s one of the best of the new generation of rappers at using Autotune. “Uh Huh” is an upbeat radio-ready slapper where Hunxho lets the opps know that they shouldn’t want war and they better be easy before they get they chick swiped. Tee Grizz moves with that rocket on him and stays with a chunky chain around his neck. All his niggas got straps (or shanks). He’s never lackin and always packing.
Blxst ft. Mustard & Terrace Martin - Ghetto Cinderella: Cali’s Blxst dropped a new EP this week called “Just For Clarity 2”. My favorite track is this collab with producer (and formerly ”DJ”) Mustard and multi-hyphenate Terrace Martin. It has that signature West-Coast Mustard sound (uptempo snap beat) as Blxst sings to his main thang (his Ghetto Cinderella). He loves it when she tells him to come through. He also loves it when she tells him she’s been waiting for him. She should know that he’s on the way as soon as she tells him to slide through. She’s the only one for him. Her friends say he’s crazy but he wants to be crazy together.
6lack - Talkback: 6lack is back with another single in the leadup to his new album “Since I Have a Lover”. This one sounds like it samples the same song JuiceWrld’s sampled “Lucid Dreams”, Sting’s “Shape of My Heart”. This one has an uptempo drum loop and finds 6lack not sweating the small stuff and focusing on the shit that matters. He knows he’s gotta feed the family. No more stressing, he’s got big business plans and he’s trying to stay humble throughout it all. It’s been a long road and he’s still got a ways to go.
RBE ft. Yhung T.O. & FlexCityStreets - Project Livin (Remix): RBE & Yhung T.O. dropped a compilation album with the crew called “R3al Boii Entertainment, Vol. 2”. Dope project, mMy favorite track is “Project Livin (Remix) with T.O. and FlexCityStreets. Bouncy beat, as the guys ponder if it’s worth living. All that pain from Project Livin got FCS feeling suicidal but he’s gonna keep on going. He remains the same through it all, ain’t a thang different, he’s still thuggin, still Project Livin. TO wonders if the money is worth the pain. He wishes he could rewind and do some things differently.
Hitboy x The Alchemist - Slipping Into Darkness: Alchemist went viral last week for rapping at the behest of Larry June. This week he’s back at it spitting bars over a Hit-Boy beat on this loosie “Slipping Into Darkness”. Al has a very Bronson-esque flow (90’s NY even though he’s from Cali according to the track). The beat then flips and Hit-Boy goes in over an Al beat. Tough Tune.
August Alsina - Party: On the heels of him being referenced on Chris Rock’s new standup special, August used the renewed spotlight to drop a new project called “Myself”. Dope project, he shows his range throughout including different production and experimental vocals. My favorite track is “Party” which has a jolly snap beat. He talks about grinding to get through the week and to get to Friday and Party. He realizes, “Why Wait?” might as well make everyday like a party. Drinks flowing, spending time with his main damie and when the mood is right he gets to clapping them cheeks.
NBA Youngboy - Demon Party: YB got a new album coming soon and he’s released yet another single in the lead up. “Demon Party” is a downtempo track with acoustic strings. YB uses a melodic flow to spit about the many things he buys with his money (watches, Cartier shades, Bentleys). He just ran up the money again and now he’s thinking about buying more land. He don’t play bout them bands.
G Perico, DJ Drama & RJMrLA - Everything: “Ready, Set Gooooo!” G Perico & DJ Drama finally dropped their Gangsta Grillz tape “Hot Shot” this week. GP made sure his Enterprise Clique was well represented throughout (including a dope outro track where he Shouts out the squad). My favorite track is the RJ collab “Everything”. Perico wants everything he got coming including success, love & money. On the come up, his back was against the wall so he had nothing to lose and now he’s enjoying Everything.
Luh Tyler & BabyTron - Fat Racks Pt. 2: Two young rising stars linked on a new loosie. Keys set it off on the Detroit Type Beat then LT gets to spitting about his favorite things including OPP & Mary Jane. He will make sure his fam straight before he buys a chain. BabyTron is higher than Saturn and vows to never wife a chick. He used to be a window shopper now he hits the mall and splurges. He smokes hella blunts and sips drank like it’s water.
Jim Jones & Hitmaka ft. Goldiie - Status Update: Jim & Hitmaka dropped their new collab project "Back In My Prime" this week. Super dope, with recognizable samples (Hitmaka’s signature). My favorite track is “Status Update” with Goldiie. Jim gets super real about everything including his relationship with Cam and helping Mel Matrix get through his bid. He even admits knowing that the boys got some dirt on him and knows that he’s blessed to be a free man.
D STURDY & Fivio Foreign - Against The World: D STURDY dropped a new track with NY Drill elements and a Jersey Club bounce. And he got Fivi to hop on. D was down last year but now he up, rocking ice and stacking chips. Day after day and night after night, he knows he gotta move right. Fivi makes all those around him rich and you’ll never catch him without the flame on him.
Bankrol Hayden ft. Zzz. - Penthouse: Cali’s Bankrol Hayden dropped a new album called “29” this week. Excellent album with latin vibes throughout including the lead track “Cabo” and my favorite track “Penthouse” with Zzz. Bankrol is with the crew in a penthouse relaxing, he came up but he still bout that action. He’s posted up like an IG caption and he really lives this shit. Zzz. counting so many hundreds his fingers are blue. He takes shots to get his mind off all the fake shit (and fake people) in his orbit. Check out “29” and these standouts:
Cabo
Deep End (ft. Lil Skies)
Bop Slide (ft. Blueface, Maxo Kream & OhGeesy)
Cincinnati
Swizz Beatz, Fivio Foreign, Saint JHn & Bia - Street Opera: Another track dropped for this season’s Godfather of Harlem soundtrack. I’d have never guessed we’d get Fivio and Saint Jhn on the same track but that’s what Swizz Beatz production does, it brings the people together. The operatic background vocals make the track's title feel on point. All three artists show out over the Swizz beat that has both NY Drill & Jersey Club vibes.
Conway The Machine & Jae Skeese - Promise: Conway & Jae Skeese dropped their collab project “Pain Provided Profit” this week. I really love the track “Promise”. It has a 70’s soul vibe and finds Conway talking bout traveling around the world and being a good dad. He’s as solid as they come. He strives to be the best rapper of this era. Jae Skeese handles the hook and he’s been grinding hard for this paper. He spits a verse too. He changed up his trajectory and always expects greatness from himself. He understands that in the game of life, we are all contestants and at the end of the day we all return to our essence.
ASM Bopster - 30 Shades: Another week and another great find on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. ASM Bopster dropped this loosie this week and as soon as it came on I was feeling it. Produced by OG Parker, Bospter uses the beginning of the popular McDonald’s jingle to describe how one of his side bitties loves the D. The beat has them ol skool West Coast vibes and it’s the perfect track to bump in the whip with the sunroof open.
Baby Drill - How Ya Doin?: ATL’s Baby Drill dropped a new track this week with a video to boot. “How Ya Doin?” was produced by ATL Jacob and has a distinct flute loop. BD is down with OPP, he likes eating steaks and blowing gas in Cali. He’s tryna dodge a life sentence as he lets off the baby Dracos and he always travels by private jet. All the bitties wouldn’t let him smash back in the day. Now the whole world knows his name and all the bitties wanna give him the buns.
Lil Donald - Se7en Rules: This was a super dope find on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. Lil Donlad uses it to send a message to his daughter. He tells her to never mess with a fuck nigga. If he homeless, he tells her to not let him stay with her. If she feels pain throughout the relationship, let it go. He encourages her to watch the way dude treats his kids and speaks about others. He encourages her to be an astute observer when judging a man’s character. I don’t remember the last time I heard a song so real with this subject matter. Tough Tune.
Connie Diiamond - Move: I’m a sucker for a sample and Connie Diiamond chose the perfect track to sample, Ludacris’ smash hit “Move Bitch”. Her unique voice meshes so well with the hard hitting production. I had to run this one back. It had the AirPods thumping.
