The Hit List #99: (March 13 - March 19)
Statik Selektah ft. Inspectah Deck, Method Man, Raekwon & Ghostface Killah - Unpredictable: One of the most legendary producers in Hip-Hop history got 4 members of one of the most legendary groups and they cooked up something special. The beat sounds like live drums (hi-hat & snare loop) and the piano keys give it a soulful feel. No hook needed, the guys just go in, bar after bar. It’s one of the best tracks of the year so far.
EST Gee - DROP TOP: Memphis’ EST Gee dropped a new album this week called “MAD” and it’s one of his best projects yet. I’ve had the previously released “UNDEFEATED” and “BLOW UP” in heavy rotation. He continues to show his range with different subject matter and using different deliveries. My favorite of the album cuts is “DROP TOP”. Geeski talks about riding with the top down in his Lambo, partying on yachts, and putting his people on. He’s married to the streets so he always says his prayers to stay protected. Check out “MAD” and these highlights:
PRAY YOU DIE IN SURGERY
BALL LIKE ME TOO
BLOW UP
US
LIE TO ME SOME MORE
UNDEFEATED
Danny Brown & JPEGMAFIA - Lean Beef Patty: Danny & Peggy got a collab project coming called “Scaring The Hoes Vol. 1”. For their first single they flipped Diddy’s “I Need A Girl, Pt 2”. Both gentlemen are in prime form with their distinctive flows over the trippy production. Can’t wait to hear the whole project.
03 Greedo - Bacc Like I Never Left: After spending years in a Texas Penitentiary, 03 Greedo is Bacc Like He Never Left (see what I did there?). He’s dropped a project, been on features (including another track on this week’s Hit List), and now he’s back with another track, presumably in the lead up to his official return album. This is a wavy bop where he talks about luxury cars, high-end jewelry, and smashing the baddest of bitties. He warns the opps that he still got that thang on him so don’t think shit sweet.
Lil Keed ft. Fridayy - Thank You Lord: RIP Slime. YSL’s Lil Keed, who passed away last year after a medical condition, had his first posthumous album, “Keed Talk To ‘Em 2” released this week. It’s a star studded affair with label boss Young Thug featured on a couple tracks, his brother Lil Gotit, Nav, Cordae, Trippie Redd & more. I love “All I Wanna Know” with Thugger and my favorite track is “Thank You Lord” with Fridayy who burst onto the scene on Khaled’s “God Did” with Ross, Wayne & Hov. It’s a heartfelt song about being lost and then found. It’s about thanking The Lord for his grace and mercy. Keed talks over the instrumental about this album and how it’s his most personal, most authentic project yet. He put his mind to the grind and this project is the fruit of his labor. Friday’s vocals are one a kind and really sauce this track up. Check out “Keed Talk To ‘Em 2” and these standouts:
Muso Kuso (ft. Nav)
Get Money (with Trippie Redd)
Long Way to Go
Can’t Fall Victim (ft. KayCyy)
All I Wanna Know (ft. Young Thug)
Lost My Trust (fr. Cordae)
Big Bag (ft. Young Dolly & Young Thug)
Smino - Wyoming (Freestyle): Smi is currently on tour with JID but still found time to drop a new loosie. “Wyoming (Freestyle)” is a funky track where Smino bigs up the Cowboy State and the snow. He reminisces about his come up, he was young and anointed (still is). The bitties give him head and tail and he loves those coin flips. He also shouts out the homies. There’s no jabroni’s in his dawg pound.
Money Man & Babyface Ray - Drums: One of the best independent artists in the game dropped a new album this week called “Red Eye” and it’s my favorite drop of the week. I think I’ve stated this before but MM is one of the best beat pickers in Hip-Hop and that’s even more impressive since he doesn’t have a major label backing (or maybe they’re hindering their artists…) Anyway, it’s hard to pick a favorite but this Babyface Ray collab “Drums” is a vibe. The beat has a drum loop over some bells (gives it a summertime feel). Money Man uses his signature flow to talk about his come up, smashing sneezes, zips of the za, and trapping out of apartments. Ray leaves his Prada kicks on when he’s beating cheeks. He just ran up the money again and his girl never has to pay for shit. He still rolls around with the drillers, so be easy around him and his crew. Check out “Red Eye” and these highlights:
Law
Traits
Today
Jet Speed
Opposite
Vory
Pacman Da Gunman - Don’t Let Em Break You: All Money In’s Paman Da Gunman dropped a motivational single this week. The message is simple. No matter how hard it gets, how many setbacks, obstacles, let downs, doubts, broken hearts, broken promises, you gotta withstand it all and Don’t Let It Break You.
100 gecs - Dumbest Girl Alive: I first heard of 100 gecs when Lil West (shoutout Delaware) appeared on the remix to the track gecgecgec. I saw they dropped a new album this week called “10,000 gecs” and I had to give it a spin. Dope project, lots of experiential Pop music with some Hip-Hop elements on some of the tracks. My favorite track is “Dumbest Girl Alive”. Firstly I didn’t know this was a duo but a quick google and I found out it’s a guy and a girl (or whatever they consider themselves). On “Dumbest Girl Alive” LL (Laura Les) proclaims to be completely devoid of intelligence over what starts as a hard rock instrumental that transitions into a Hip-Hop-ish beat. Dope track and high level of self awareness by LL.
Rated-R Playboy ft. Rick Ross - Same Number: This track is buttery smooth. RRP keeps it P and doesn’t need a rich bitty to know that he’s winning. He uses a speedy delivery that compliments the laidback beat well and offers a nice sonic contrast. He prays for the bag and vows to never change (he even has the Same Number). Ross comes on after the beat flips into a darker production with fast keys. He gets in his bag and talks about staying fresh and clean, flipping bricks, and getting blowjobs.
The Weekend ft. A$AP Rocky & Young Thug - Reminder (Remix): The Weeknd dropped the Deluxe to his 2017 album Starboy this week. I’d guess him remixing “Die For You” with Ariana Grande and seeing it fly to the top of the charts would be cause for such a delayed Bonus album. Ont the Deluxe, he also dropped a Kygo Remix to “Starboy” and this remix of “Reminder” with Thugger & Rocky. The original production stays the same but now we get bars from two of the generation's biggest stars.
T-Pain - Stay With Me: T-Pain dropped a new album called “On Top of the Covers” with song covers that span decades of classic music. From Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” to Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” Teddy P wasn’t afraid to take on all his faves. My favorite was his cover of Sam Smith’s breakout hit “Stay With Me”. As an R&B singer this was just a natural track for Tallahassee Pain. I hope he puts out more projects like these. I was cruising to this one.
Metro Boomin ft. The Weekend, 21 Savage & Diddy - Creepin (Remix): The original Creepin was a highlight of Metro Boomin’s solo project “Heroes & Villains” not just for the 21 Savage and Weekend features but also for sampling the Mario Winans hit “I Don’t Wanna Know”. It was only right for Bad Boy Boss and Master of the Remix Sean “Diddy” “Brother Love” “Puffy” Combs to hop on the remix. Puff talks his shit of course, claiming he’s touched every end of the earth, and that he gets all the bad bitties while riding with the top down (he ain’t lying). He lets the shawtys know they can make love or make trillions (or both probably).
OT The Real - Changes: Philly spitter. OT The Real dropped a new project this week called “It’s Almost Over”. My favorite track is “Changes”. It has the sped up soul sampled vocals in the background that made Ye blow up. He first pays his respect to Pat Stay and then goes in about real shit like loyalty and losing dead homies. He talks about life's ups and downs and knows money won’t bring anyone back. He promises to honor his lost ones’ memories as he continues his climb to the top.
Doechii ft. Kodak Black - What It Is (Block Boy): TDE’s Doechii dropped this collab track with Kodak this week and this one’s dedicated to the street niggas. Doechii knows they need love too and she’s willing to give it. Doechii uses the same flow from Trillville’s “Some Cut”. Yak embodies the type of dude Doechii is singing to and he knows behind every Top G is a strong woman holding him down. He got a lil situation and they vibin so he good.
R3 Da Chilliman ft. 03 Greedo - Like It’s His: Cali’s R3 Da Chilliman dropped a new album this week called “Chilli Season”. It’s West Coast through and through. My favorite track is the collab with recently released fellow Californian 03 Greedo (reminder he’s from Watts not LA). It’s a downtempo snap beat and Chilliman let’s us know that the money comes first. And he’s coming for all the cash Like It’s His. He’s claiming it, manifesting it, and now he’s on the way. 03 is on parole but he still totes a pole. He knows the importance of knowing his foes (friends close, enemies closer). He’s shooting like the white boy on the Thunder (Giddey maybe?) They call him Greedy and since he was a seed he had the hunger.
Pi’erre Bourne - Honeyberry 2: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: It’s a cheat code when you can make your own beats. You can keep all the good shit for yourself (PB spreads the love tho). I hadn’t heard the original Honeyberry but this Honeyberry 2 track is special. I listened to Honeyberry 1 and Pi’erre screamed “Fuck Love” and on part 2 he raps about his girl trippin on him. He knows he ain’t perfect but he don’t deserve to get done dirty. It’s a love turmoil anthem. Shawty say she want love but he know she lying. The beat is a Pi’erre special. Honeyberry 2 is a whole ass vibe.
Curren$y & Jermaine Dupri - Essence Fest: These 2 Southern superstars have a collab album coming called “For Motivational Use Only” and this is one of the lead up singles. It’s an homage to the annual Essence Fest that is hosted in Curre$y’s hometown of New Orleans. The beat has that New Orleans bounce and Curren$y raps about his favorite things: Chevys on Chrome, taking the pros home, rolling then smokin hella za. He wonders if the shawty he brings home is gonna hit the weed. He also encourages his ladies to splurge on him. If you think Curren$y will like it, cop it. You’ll earn major brownie points if you do.
Bry Greatah - Meant To Be: Another week, another great find on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop playlist. This one samples Lloyd & Weezy’s smash hit “You”. Bry been balling, running them bands up, copping VVS diamonds. He reminisces about one of his bitties. He know she ain’t gon ride but he still got her on his mind. He knows what’s Meant To Be will be.
Yung Mal - Voices: Louisiana born, Georgia-raised Yung Mal dropped a new project this week called “Iceburg Where You Been” Super tough project. My favorite track is “Voices” where YM describes the Voices in his head tellin him to ball. He’s stacking the money tall, cutting off his disloyal homies, smashing bitties. He knows all he has in this life is his world and his balls. Check out “Iceburg Where You Been” and these standouts:

No Stylist

PGF GlizzyMoe - Speak On That: Another great find on the Apple Music New Hip-Hop Playlist. When this one came on I immediately knew it was special. Beat knocks, GlizzyMoe been turnt, he got the whole city hot. Opps thought shit was sweet but he’ll wet up they block from every angle.
Eladio Carrión & Lil Wayne - Gladiator (Remix): Eladio Carrión dropped a new album this week called “3MEN2 KBRN” and he got hella heavy hitters on there including Future, Weezy, Fif, Bad Bunny. Fivi, Quavo, Tjay & more. This Weezy verse is epic and although I don’t understand the Spanish lyrics, I do know it’s a Tough Tune.
