The Hit List: Week 24 (Oct 4 - Oct 10)
Don Toliver - Double Standards: Jackboy, Donny T (the Black one) dropped a new album this week called “Life of a DON” and it’s phenomenal! He shows his range, bar and melodies. Some slow shit, some upbeat shit, all dope shit. On “Double Standards” he sings to his main lady over the Mike Dean produced beat and lets her know that he’s aware of the double standards that exist. He assures her that he sees her (metaphorically and shit) and he appreciates her for all she is and does. Other highlights from “Life of a DON”:
5X
Way Bigger
What You Need
Drugs N Hella Melodies (ft. Kali Uchis)
2AM
You (ft. Travis Scott)
Sleepy Hallow - Don’t Front Freestyle: One of my favorite young artists, Sleepy Hallow, dropped the Deluxe to his 2021 release “Still Sleep?”. It contains some new tracks and some remixes from the original release. On “Don’t Front Freestyle” he lets us know his chick is so bad that he makes sexy time with her from the front. Also his momma is proud of him. He just purchased a legal gun and he’s smart but sometimes goes dumb. Also check out “Luv Em All” another track from the Deluxe.
ShooterGang Kony - Hall of Fame: Fresh off the release of his new album “StarShooter” SGK is back with a loosie for the people and as usual it’s super hard. Kony never had a pot to piss in. He never had diamonds, just guns. He will pull the blammer out if you try to rob him. He also has many women that he has passionate doggystyle sex with (protected of course).
Tame Impala ft. Lil Yachty - Breathe Deeper (Remix): This song was released previously but TI (Tame Impala that is) asked Yachty to throw his sauce on and boy is Lil Yachty’s sauce tasty! (Pause, unpause). Over the same funky, disco-ish instrumental Lil Boat spits game to a shawty and dances the night away once she enters his orbit. Now they are as one (doing the nasty).
John Sparkz ft. Action Bronson & Jim Jones - Uncle Junior: A lil boom bap for the old niggas in the back. The title of the track pays homage to the beloved (or hated) Sopranos character who was also a main character in the recently released “Many Saints of Newark” prequel. The John Sparks produced beat is perfect for Bronson and Jones and they murder it like the White Bronco AB references in his verse (iykyk and the old heads should know).
Tech N9ne & Lil Wayne ft. Mumu Fresh - Too Good: The biggest indie rapper of all time dropped a new project this week called “ASIN9NE”. It features Hip-Hop legends Wayne and E-40, his Strange Music family, and other indie titans like Russ. Also, The Rock is on a track (gtfoh!). On “Too Good” Techa Nina and Weezy (Blood Brothers) go in over the mellow beat. Tech Nine compares himself to Egyptian gods and also threatens to stomp out marks if they get outta line. Mumu Fresh lends her soulful vocals to the bridge. Wayne rides in a drop top with a rare Richard Mille watch while holding a pistol. Be careful if you see Dwayne lurking, he eats rappers. Other dope tracks “ASIN9NE”:
I DON’T FIT with King Iso (ft. Seuss Mace)
No See Umz with Snow Tha Product & Russ
Face Off with Joey Cool, King Iso & Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
Clydesdale with E-40
Knock That Noodle (ft. Marley Young)
WHAT RHYMES WITH THREAT’LL KILL YA (ft. Zkeircrow & Phlaque The Grimestress)
I Been Thru a Lot (ft. Stige)
Dial It Back (ft. Navé Monjo)
Special (ft. Ashten Ray)
Cordae - Super: The young artist made 7 million in the pandemic and didn’t do a single show. He got a big bag from Coca-Cola and he texts back and forth with Twitter co-founder & CEO Jack Dorsey. He’s a skilled lyricist and seems to be gearing up for his sophomore album. Can’t wait.
Nardo Wick ft. Lil Durk, G Herbo & 21 Savage - Who Want Smoke??: Nardo Wick asks “Who Want Smoke wit me?” The answer is not me. He has many guns and spins the block until he’s dizzy. He will knock your lungs out and eat your face. He believes his draco is gay because it “blows niggas”. (Don’t look at me like that… He said it, I didn’t). We already know what type of time Durk, Herb and 21 on. Give them a hard beat like this and you know what’s happening. Real deal steppas.
YN Jay ft. Lil Uzi Vert - Coochie Scout Pt 2: YN Jay has to be from Detroit because this a Detroit beat if I ever heard it and YNJ flow is the most Detroitest I’ve heard this year. The dopest part of this is hearing Uzi with the Detroit flow and these niggas talking about coochie the whole time. My girl is gonna beat my ass if this come on in the Q50. “Hold on!”
Lute - Be Okay: Dreamville artist Lute dropped his debut album “Gold Mouf” and it’s a gem. Soulful, introspective, full of substantive, nutritious music (everything you expect from the Dreamville camp). On “Be Okay” Lute takes inventory of where he is in life, gets real about how he’s feeling, and chooses optimism because he knows he’s gonna Be Okay. Also from “Gold Mouf”:
GED (Gettin Every Dollar)
Eye to Eye (ft. Cozz)
Changes (ft. BJ The Chicago Kid)
Birdsong (ft. J.I.D & Saba)
Amen (ft. Little Brother)
Flossin (ft. WESTSIDE BOOGIE)
Cookin Soul ft. Willie Da Kid - Behold: Production team Cookin Soul put out a new project this week called “Good Job”. On “Behold” the funky, jazzy beat sets the tone and Willie Da Kid talks that shit. He’ll smash ya baby moms and lick her hooters. He pushes the limit, pushes the envelope. He’s a stickler and takes pride in everything he does. He’s so bold, he’s so cold, all you can do is behold. He’s unfoldable and uncontrollable. Some other standouts from “Good Job”:
Thug Till It’s Over ft. Freddie Gibbs
Come On Baby (ft. Mac Miller)
About you (ft. Jayy Grams)
Notta Game (ft. TEK)
Masego ft. Big Boi & J.I.D - Garden Party: Sego back! After dropping “Studying Abroad” last year he’s back at it again. Horns and all. Featuring Down South heavyweights Big Boi and J.ID, they have a party filled with good drinks, good people, good vibes and big booties. You can be sure it’s a good time at that fiesta.
Zo Morese - Big Steppa: Jersey spitter Zo Morese first popped up on my radar when he released “WE OUTSIDE” earlier this year to celebrate things opening back up post-pandemic (at least post 1st wave, Corona came back like cooked crack). He dropped an album this week called “Bring the Summer Back (Airplane Mode)”. On this track he gets deep. Talks about the ills of the world, crooked politicians and shit. But he just trying to keep the mission and the vision ‘cause time’s tickin. He’s not racist, he’s got 2 snow bunnies in the infinity pool. Check these other tracks from “Bring the Summer Back (Airplane Mode)”:
Dusty
WE OUTSIDE (ft. DJ SLIICKK & MIKE MILLZ)
Dream Girl
Hot Minute
Pull Up
Kyle Banks ft. BlueBucksClan - Bogus: Trippy beat, KB hip to the bullshit. Shawty say she love him but he know she cappin. He got an iced out Rollie to stay shinin during dark times. BBC be stealing niggas chicks. Everytime they show up it’s a movie.
Keys N Krates ft. Haviah Mighty - Pull Up: Super hard beat, and Queen Haviah Mighty surfs it with expert precision. She sings to an old flame to rewind and pull up one more time. Upbeat, with some island vibes. Tough tune.
